The next installment in Marvel's extremely successful Cinematic Universe will hit theaters on February 16th when Chadwick Boseman portrays the T'Challa, the Black Panther, in the character's first feature film.
In a shift from most Marvel and superhero films, Black Panther will feature a predominantly African-American cast. But the black culture doesn't stop there: one of the biggest hip-hop stars alive will be rapping and producing the soundtrack for the film.
Kendrick Lamar and fellow Top Dog Entertainment producer Anthony Tiffith will handle the making of Black Panther: The Album. And with Kendrick appearing on five tracks and a star-studded list of features including Travis Scott, Vince Staples, Swae Lee, Ab-Soul, The Weeknd, and many more, this could be one of the biggest hip-hop releases in 2018 to date.
Lamar tweeted out the tracklist which breaks down as follows:
- "Black Panther" Kendrick Lamar
- "All The Stars" Kendrick Lamar and SZA
- "X" ScHoolBoy Q, 2 Chainz and Saudi
- "The Ways" Khalid and Swae Lee
- "Opps" Vince Staples and Young Blackrok
- "I Am" Jorja Smith
- "Paramedic!" SOB x RBE
- Bloody Waters" Ab-Soul, Anderson .Paak and James Blake
- "Kings Dead" Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Future and James Blake
- "Redemption Interlude"
- "Redemption" Zicari, Babes Wodumo
- "Seasons" Mozzy, Sjava and Reason
- "Big Shot" Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott
- "Pray For Me" The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar
While "All The Stars" and "Kings Dead" have been released, much of the album will still come as a surprise when it releases on February 9th.
Director Ryan Coogler says he chose Lamar for the album because his "artistic themes align with those [explored in the film]"
Personally, I'm very interested in how Lamar handles the song named after the film, as well as his collaboration with Travis Scott.
